about

By Alastair Mackie
Alastair Mackie: guitar, vocals; Matheu Watson: viola, harmonium, whistle

The song is inspired by ‘Story of a sickly girl welcoming death’, as told by Stanley Robertson (SA1982/026). The story is about a sick girl who sees the personification of death every night on the horizon, eventually riding away with him despite her mother’s warning to keep away. Alastair links the story’s portrayal of the futile attempt to stop death to the ‘carrying stream’ of tradition. This song is about the fluidity of tradition and that attempting to resist it is as fruitless as warding off death’s inevitability. In the song, Alastair combines elements of traditional Scottish music with some sound experimentation.
