about

By Hazel Turnbull
Hazel Turnbull: piano; Elinor Evans: clarsach; Charlie Stewart: double bass and fiddle

Samhainn, on 31st October, is said to be the day when the spirits of departed loved ones are permitted to walk amongst the living. Hazel started her research listening to Brucie Henderson discuss Shetland Hallowe’en divination (SA1954/115) and delved deeper from there. “I fell in love with the notion of Samhainn. The concept of ‘one last day’ was both tragic, yet romantic for me. I wrote Samhainn as a waltz, and imagined it as dance between loved ones.” Hazel
