about

By Kirsty Law
Kirsty Law: vocals; Pàdruig Morrison: piano and accordion; Charlie Stewart: double bass

This song begins with an Edinburgh street cry - a rhyme or chant that street sellers traditionally used to sell their wares. Kirsty found this particular one recited by Elizabeth Brunton, which describes a girl selling milk, on a tape made in 1964 by Hamish Henderson when he was interviewing women from Leith and Newhaven (SA1964/149). This cry, depicting the 'barefit lassie', inspired her to write three more verses describing women that she knows or knows of who use song in their everyday lives.
