about

(Hazel Turnbull/ Pàdruig (Peter) Morrison)
The Bar-room Mountaineers (Hazel Turnbull)/Sgeul Bodach Ròcabarraigh (Pàdruig (Peter) Morrison)
Hazel Turnbull: piano; Pàdruig Morrison Sr: voice (reproduced with permission from Lachie Morrison and the School of Scottish Studies Archives); Euan Burton: additional piano; Charlotte Murray: original samples

Pàdruig Morrison Sr tells the story of a young man from Rockall who comes ashore in Uist after getting lost in the fog, unable find his way back home. He has a family and grows old there, but leaves the day his sons find an unusual fish that will help him return (SA1974/051). Hazel was inspired to write the tune to this track after hearing the story of the Barroom Mountaineers in a song performed by Ray Fisher (SA1960/245). Although it’s a funny story, it struck a sad chord with Hazel, who imagines it played at closing time as the men file out and amble home.
